History
Named after the Barry family who farmed in the valley in the 19th century, Barrydale developed as a small service town for the surrounding fruit and grain farms. The town remained quiet and off the tourist radar until the R62 wine route gained traction in the early 2000s and artists began settling in the affordable cottages of the village. The Barrydale Cellars and the Van Loveren Brandy Cellar put the town on the wine map. Today it is a well-established artisan community with an outsized cultural footprint.
What Barrydale is Known For
Barrydale is known for its witblits (white lightning) — the traditional Karoo fruit brandy — and for Barrydale Cellars, which produces excellent brandy and wine. The Ronnie's Sex Shop, a roadside bar 18 km from town with a legendary story (originally called Ronnie's Shop, the name was changed by local pranksters), is a pilgrimage for R62 travellers. The Diesel & Crème restaurant is one of the most celebrated small-town restaurants in the Western Cape.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The village is centred on a main road through town, with a church, a few shops, and the Barrydale Cellars tasting room. Artisan studios, guesthouses, and cottages line the side streets. The valley around the village is farmed with grapes, apricots, and peaches. The surrounding Langeberg and Rooiberg mountains provide dramatic scenery. There are no townships or suburbs to speak of — Barrydale is genuinely tiny.
Economy & Industry
Wine, brandy, and artisanal food production are the primary economic activities. Tourism along the R62 brings consistent visitor spend. Fruit farming — apricots, peaches, and grapes — sustains the agricultural base. The artisan economy of studios, galleries, and specialty food producers has grown considerably. Retirement and second-home ownership drives real estate.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
