History
Belfast was established in 1890 and named after Belfast in Northern Ireland by an Ulster settler. The town grew as a railway junction on the Pretoria-Delagoa Bay (Maputo) line, which was a critically important trade route. The high-altitude location made it cooler than most Mpumalanga towns, and the town developed as a service point for the surrounding Highveld farms and for travellers on the N4 corridor.
What Belfast is Known For
Belfast is known for its extraordinary cold — winter temperatures regularly drop below -10°C, and snow falls most winters on the Steenkampsberg plateau. Trout fly fishing on the mountain streams and dams of the Steenkampsberg is excellent, and several trout farms and fishing lodges operate in the district. The surrounding plateau grasslands have exceptional wildflowers in spring. The Abel Erasmus Pass is 50 km south through the escarpment to the Lowveld.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town centre on the N4 has basic commercial services. Residential areas are modest and functional. The surrounding plateau farms produce timber, potatoes, and livestock in the cold climate. Middelburg is 50 km west on the N4. The Abel Erasmus and Strijdom tunnels are dramatic engineering achievements to the south. Several fishing lodges are on private farms around the town.
Economy & Industry
Agriculture — potatoes, cattle, and timber in the cold highland environment — is the primary economic activity. Trout fishing tourism generates income for surrounding lodges and farms. Retail and transit services serve the N4 corridor. Healthcare and education are stable employment sectors. The Steenkampsberg Cold Bokkeveld environment supports specialist cold-climate agriculture.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
Belfast is 250 km from Pretoria on the N4. The N4 through here can be treacherous in winter snow and ice — check road conditions November–August. Fly fishing lodges require advance booking; enquire at the Belfast Tourism office. The Abel Erasmus Pass south of town (on the R540) is a spectacular mountain drive. The town has basic retail and medical facilities. The winter cold is genuine — pack serious warm clothing for a June–August visit.
