History
Founded in 1864 as a mission station and Voortrekker settlement, Bethlehem was named after the biblical city. It grew as a market town for the surrounding wheat, cattle, and cherry farming community. The arrival of the railway in the 1890s accelerated its development. Today, Central University of Technology has a campus in the town, bringing an academic dimension alongside its strong agricultural identity.
What Bethlehem is Known For
Bethlehem is best known as the Cherry Capital of South Africa — cherry orchards cover the surrounding foothills, and the annual Cherry Festival in November draws visitors from across the country. The Loch Athlone dam provides water recreation. The highlands around Bethlehem are popular with hikers and fly-fishermen. The nearby Sterkfontein Dam Nature Reserve is a birding and angling destination.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The CBD along Muller Street is compact and well-stocked with banks and retailers. Rooikoppe and Welgelegen are established Afrikaner residential suburbs. Phelindaba and Bohlokong are the main township areas, home to the majority of the population. The Central University of Technology campus is east of town. Surrounding farms produce cherries, wheat, and dairy in the fertile highland valleys.
Economy & Industry
Agriculture — particularly cherry, wheat, and potato farming — drives the local economy alongside dairy and livestock. The Central University of Technology campus supports education, retail, and service sectors. The town is a commercial hub for surrounding highland farming communities. The cherry processing industry and cold chain logistics are significant employers. Tourism around the Cherry Festival and highland outdoor activities adds seasonal income.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
Bethlehem is 270 km from Johannesburg on the N5 and 160 km from Bloemfontein. The Cherry Festival in November is the best time to visit — book accommodation months in advance. The Sterkfontein Dam is 30 km from town and worth a half-day detour. Winters in the highlands can be severe with sub-zero temperatures and snow; pack warm clothing for a June–August visit. The town has good medical facilities and full retail coverage.
