History
Bhisho was developed in the 1960s and 1970s as the capital of the Ciskei homeland — one of apartheid's "independent" bantustans. The name derives from the Xhosa word for "in the middle." The Bisho Massacre of 1992, when Ciskei troops opened fire on ANC marchers, killed 28 people and was a pivotal moment in South Africa's transition to democracy. After 1994, Bhisho became the provincial capital of the Eastern Cape, a role it retains despite the province's economic hub being in East London and Gqeberha.
What Bhisho is Known For
Bhisho is known primarily as the seat of the Eastern Cape provincial government. The provincial legislature building is the town's centrepiece. The Bisho Massacre memorial commemorates the 28 people killed in 1992. The town is home to the Eastern Cape Premier's office and all major provincial departments. King William's Town (Qonce), 3 km west, has a more substantial commercial and historical identity and is often considered part of the same urban area.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town is dominated by government buildings, offices, and the provincial legislature. There is minimal commercial development outside government-related services. The legislature and provincial offices are the defining built environment. King William's Town (Qonce) 3 km west has the actual commercial centre for the area. The Bhisho airport serves the area. Residential development is limited.
Economy & Industry
Government is overwhelmingly the economic driver — the provincial administration and all provincial departments are headquartered here. Healthcare and education support the government administration. King William's Town and East London provide the commercial economic base for the surrounding area. The broader Buffalo City Metropolitan area has a more diversified economic base.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
Bhisho is 50 km from East London on the N2. King William's Town (Qonce), 3 km west, has restaurants, retail, and accommodation — there is very little in Bhisho itself. The Bisho Massacre memorial site is on the road leading to the legislature — a brief, sobering stop. The provincial legislature building is visible from the main road. East London Airport is 45 km east. Combine a Bhisho government visit with a stay in East London or King William's Town.
