History
Boksburg was established in 1887, one year after the Witwatersrand gold rush, and was named after the State Secretary of the South African Republic, Willem Eduard Bok. The town grew rapidly as a mining settlement on the Witwatersrand reef and became an important East Rand commercial centre. The Boksburg Lake, formed from a flooded mine pit in the town centre, became one of the East Rand's most significant recreational features. The East Rand Mall, opened in 1978, was one of the first large enclosed shopping centres in Gauteng and transformed the retail landscape of the area.
What Boksburg is Known For
Boksburg is known locally for the East Rand Mall, one of Gauteng's older but still active major regional shopping centres. Rand Airport on the eastern edge of Boksburg is one of South Africa's most historically significant general aviation airports — it was the site of many early South African aviation milestones and remains a hub for flying schools, private aircraft, and air shows. The Boksburg Lake in the town centre is a recreational water body used for fishing and water sports.
