History
Gold was discovered in the Brakpan area in the late 1890s, and the town was formally established in 1919. The name "Brakpan" means "brackish pan" in Afrikaans, referring to the saline pans in the area. The gold mines drove rapid growth through the first half of the 20th century. As gold reserves diminished, manufacturing and light industry filled the economic gap. Brakpan became part of the Ekurhuleni Metro in 2000.
