History
The town was established in 1948 when Guy Carleton Jones, a mining magnate, developed the area after gold was discovered extending from the main Witwatersrand reef. Mines like TauTona and Mponeng, which plumb depths of 3–4km below surface, established Carletonville as home to the world's deepest gold mining operations. The town grew rapidly to house miners and their families, and today has a population deeply intertwined with the mining cycle.
What Carletonville is Known For
Carletonville is known primarily for hosting Mponeng Gold Mine — the world's deepest operational gold mine, reaching over 4km below surface. The surrounding area has multiple active and recently closed gold mining operations. The town is also known for sinkholes — the limestone dolomite geology underlying the area creates ongoing subsidence risk, a dramatic reminder of the instability beneath the surface.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town has a commercial centre with retail, banking, and services catering to the mining workforce and their families. Mine hostels and company housing complement private residential suburbs. The surrounding West Rand landscape includes mine headgear, dumps, and the characteristic gold mining infrastructure visible from any vantage point. Greenspark and Fochville are nearby satellite communities.
Economy & Industry
Gold mining is the economic foundation, with Anglo Gold Ashanti's Mponeng mine being the largest employer. Mine supply and service industries — engineering, maintenance, chemicals, logistics — support the primary extraction economy. Retail, hospitality, and government services serve the resident population. The town's economy is directly exposed to gold price fluctuations and mine lifecycle decisions.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
The dolomite sinkhole risk is real and monitored — avoid unfenced open ground, particularly in older parts of town. Mine tours are not routinely available to the public due to security and safety requirements. Johannesburg is about 70km east on the N14 for major retail, medical, and entertainment. Potchefstroom (University of North West) is 40km south for a more complete town experience.
