History
Founded in 1814 as a military frontier post to protect the Cape Colony's frontier, Cradock was named after Sir John Cradock, Governor of the Cape Colony. It grew as a wool and Karoo farming centre. The 19th-century author Olive Schreiner, who wrote the landmark novel "The Story of an African Farm," was schooled here and spent much of her life in the region. The town is also remembered for the Cradock Four — anti-apartheid activists who were abducted and murdered here in 1985.
What Cradock is Known For
Cradock is known for the Mountain Zebra National Park, 25 km west of town, which was established specifically to protect the endangered Cape mountain zebra and today hosts a range of wildlife. The Olive Schreiner House Museum commemorates the pioneering South African author. The hot springs spa at the Cradock Spa Resort draws visitors. The church in the Drostdy square is a national monument, and the Great Fish River Museum documents the town's history.
