History
Delareyville was established in 1912 and named after General Koos de la Rey, the "Lion of the West," who was killed in 1914 at a police roadblock near Johannesburg in a case of mistaken identity that shocked the country. The town developed as an agricultural market hub for the North West farming district. General De la Rey's memory is deeply revered in Afrikaner culture, and the town maintains pride in his legacy.
What Delareyville is Known For
Delareyville is known primarily as the town named after General Koos de la Rey — the Anglo-Boer War's most respected Boer general. The surrounding district is a productive maize and sunflower farming area. The town hosts agricultural shows that celebrate the farming heritage of the district. The broader Tswaing area includes the Tswaing Meteorite Crater (salt pan crater) near Soshanguve — a day trip for visitors.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town centre is small and compact, with essential commercial services. The main road has a few shops, a fuel station, and basic services. Residential areas are quiet and agricultural in character. Surrounding farmland stretches to the horizon with maize, sunflower, and cattle. Sannieshof is a similar-sized nearby town. The R34 connects Delareyville to Lichtenburg and Vryburg.
Economy & Industry
Maize, sunflower, and cattle farming are the overwhelming economic activities. The agricultural cooperative and grain silos are key economic infrastructure. Retail and government services serve the local community. The broader North West agricultural belt is one of the most productive in South Africa, and Delareyville sits at its centre. Lichtenburg (50 km north) is the district's main commercial centre.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
Delareyville is 330 km from Johannesburg. The town has very basic retail and services — Lichtenburg is 50 km north for full services. If driving the R34 through the North West, this is a fuel stop with a General De la Rey history connection. The agricultural character of the surrounding landscape is the primary draw. Summers are hot; winters cold and dry on the Highveld plateau. Book accommodation in Lichtenburg or Vryburg for an overnight stop.
