History
Dullstroom was established in 1883 by a group of Dutch immigrants and named after their home town of Dullstroom in the Netherlands. The cold, wet climate of the Steenkampsberg initially made farming difficult, but the introduction of trout to the highland streams in the early 20th century transformed the area. The fly fishing tradition attracted visitors from Pretoria and Johannesburg, and the town gradually built a tourism economy around the unique highland experience.
What Dullstroom is Known For
Dullstroom is known as South Africa's fly fishing capital — rainbow and brown trout thrive in the crystal-clear highland streams and dams around the town, and fly fishing estates operate throughout the district. The Dullstroom Brewing Company is a craft brewery and pub that draws beer enthusiasts. The Dullstroom Distillery produces one of South Africa's few single malt whiskies. The highland scenery of grasslands, valleys, and mountain streams is extraordinarily beautiful.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The village is compact with a main road lined with restaurants, craft shops, and tasting rooms. Guesthouses and fishing lodges surround the village on private farms and dams. The Dullstroom Inn and several other establishments are institutions. Surrounding farms are given over almost entirely to trout fishing operations and highland cattle. The Steenkampsberg plateau provides the dramatic backdrop. Belfast is 25 km north on the N4.
Economy & Industry
Fly fishing tourism is the primary economic driver — dozens of fishing lodges and day-permit dams operate in the district. The craft beer, whisky, and artisan food economy has grown substantially. Guesthouse accommodation serves the Gauteng weekend market. Agriculture — highland cattle and sheep — is practiced on surrounding farms. Retail and services are minimal; most visitors bring supplies.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
Dullstroom is 250 km from Johannesburg on the N4. Book fishing lodges and guesthouses 4–6 weeks ahead for peak season (September–May) and school holidays. The Dullstroom Brewing Company and Dullstroom Distillery are the main non-fishing activities. The N4 through Dullstroom is excellent — the drive through the Steenkampsberg is spectacular. Winters are extremely cold with frost; bring serious warm clothing. No significant medical facilities; Belfast (25 km) or Middleburg (50 km) for emergencies.
