History
Estcourt was established in 1863 and named after John Estcourt, a British Member of Parliament who supported settlement in Natal. The town grew as a railway junction and market town for the KZN midlands farming community. The surrounding area was the site of several Anglo-Boer War engagements, and Winston Churchill was famously captured near Estcourt in 1899 during an armoured train ambush — an incident that launched his political career.
What Estcourt is Known For
Estcourt is known as the home of Eskort meats — the large pork and meat processing factory is one of the town's largest employers. Winston Churchill's capture near Estcourt during the Boer War is documented at the Fort Durnford Museum. The Drakensberg foothills begin south of town. The Wagendrift Dam is a popular water sports and picnic destination. The town is a commercial base for exploring the central Drakensberg.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
Church Street and the CBD are the commercial hub. Wembezi and Loskop are large township areas. Centocow and the residential suburbs house the middle-income community. The Eskort factory is a significant industrial presence. Wagendrift Dam is 10 km south-east.
