History
The site of modern Gqeberha was a Khoikhoi trading area before British forces established Fort Frederick at the mouth of the Baakens River in 1799. The town was formally founded in 1820 when 4,000 British settlers arrived as part of a colonial effort to stabilise the eastern frontier of the Cape Colony, and it grew as a wool export port serving the Karoo interior. Volkswagen South Africa established its plant in adjacent Uitenhage in 1951, cementing the city's identity as South Africa's automotive manufacturing hub for the following decades.

Gqeberha is best known as South Africa's automotive hub, with Volkswagen SA's Uitenhage plant producing vehicles for both domestic and export markets. The city's beachfront from Humewood to Summerstrand offers a long sweep of Blue Flag beaches. Addo Elephant National Park, 72 kilometres north, is one of South Africa's most accessible Big Five game reserves. The Donkin Reserve and lighthouse in the CBD mark where Sir Rufane Donkin named the town after his late wife Elizabeth in 1820.

The CBD retains a mix of functioning commercial blocks and significant urban decay. Summerstrand is the coastal suburb with the highest concentration of hotels, restaurants, and beachfront activity. Newton Park is one of the larger middle-class residential areas. Walmer is adjacent to the airport with mixed residential and commercial uses. Motherwell and KwaMagxaki are the largest township areas, housing the majority of the city's Black population to the north of the urban core.
Economy & Industry
Gqeberha's economy is anchored by the automotive sector — Volkswagen SA and its supplier network form the largest employment cluster. The Port of Ngqura at Coega, developed from the early 2000s, has added container handling and industrial zone capacity. The public sector including Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and provincial government offices is a major employer. Tourism contributes through Addo and the beachfront, though the city has not captured international visitor numbers comparable to Cape Town.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
The wind in Gqeberha is a constant factor — the south-westerly blows strongly for much of the year and mornings are typically calmer than afternoons. The N2 provides connections westward toward the Garden Route and northward toward the Karoo. Addo Elephant Park is best visited on a self-drive basis — book accommodation inside the park in advance, particularly for weekends and school holidays.
