History
Hazyview developed in the 20th century as an agricultural service town in the lowveld, initially serving the large citrus and tropical fruit farms of the Sabie River valley. Its proximity to Kruger National Park — established in 1926 — gradually transformed it into a tourism hub. The town grew rapidly from the 1980s onward as game lodges, guesthouses, and adventure activity operators expanded to serve the booming Kruger tourism market.
What Hazyview is Known For
Hazyview is known as the most convenient base for Kruger's southern camps — Paul Kruger, Skukuza, and Pretoriuskop gates are all within 45 minutes. The Shangana Cultural Village near Hazyview offers an evening cultural performance and dinner experience. The Big Swing, one of the world's highest swings, operates from a bridge over the Sabie River near Graskop (30 km away). Blyde River Canyon is an easy 45-minute drive from town.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town centre on the R40 has banks, supermarkets, and essential services for the agricultural and tourism community. Perry's Bridge Trading Post is the main tourist retail and dining hub. Numbi Road and Sabie Road are lined with guesthouses, lodges, and budget accommodation. Mkhuhlu and Hazyview township serve the large local and farm worker population. Surrounding farms produce bananas, avocados, mangoes, and macadamias in the tropical heat.
Economy & Industry
Tourism and tropical agriculture are co-dominant. Kruger-related accommodation, guiding, game drives, and adventure activities are the primary industries. Fruit farming — bananas, mangoes, avocados, macadamias, and citrus — covers the surrounding lowveld. Retail and logistics serve the farm and tourism community. The N4 Maputo Corridor passes nearby, adding freight and logistics activity.
