History
The area takes its name from the Hluhluwe River. The Hluhluwe Game Reserve was proclaimed in 1895 alongside the Umfolozi Reserve, making them collectively the oldest game reserve in Africa and indeed the world. By the mid-20th century, the white rhino was critically endangered with fewer than 20 individuals remaining in Umfolozi. Operation Rhino, a pioneering conservation programme, rescued the species and translocated rhinos globally — virtually all southern white rhinos alive today descend from this population. The town grew around the reserve economy.
What Hluhluwe is Known For
Hluhluwe is known primarily as the gateway to the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, which offers some of the best game viewing in KwaZulu-Natal including Big Five encounters and very high rhino density. The iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is 50 km east on Lake St Lucia. The Hluhluwe community has developed curio markets, cultural experiences, and guiding services around the growing conservation tourism economy.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town is small, centred on the main road with supermarkets, hardware stores, and petrol stations. The reserve entrance is 5 km from town. Fanies Island Nature Area and the surrounding rural villages are in the broader municipality. Accommodation in the area ranges from the park's own camps (Hilltop, Mpila) to private lodges outside the reserve. Township areas house the local community.
Economy & Industry
Conservation tourism is the dominant economic driver — the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, iSimangaliso, and surrounding game lodges form one of KwaZulu-Natal's most productive wildlife tourism zones. Retail and services support the visitor economy. Sugarcane farming is practiced on surrounding coastal lowland farms. Government and conservation employment are steady. Craft markets supply tourists with Zulu art and cultural goods.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
Hluhluwe is 280 km north of Durban on the N2. Stock up on food and fuel here before entering the reserve. Book park accommodation at Hilltop Camp through SANParks well in advance. iSimangaliso St Lucia is 50 km east for wetland and lake experiences. Malaria prophylaxis is essential for this area. The best game viewing is in the dry season (May–October). Hluhluwe-iMfolozi rhino tracking experiences are extraordinary — book through the park.
