History
In 1897, the Dutch Reformed Church established a scheme to settle destitute Afrikaner families in the Northern Cape on plots carved from the Orange River. The community, largely using their own labour with guidance from engineer F.S. Louw, constructed a remarkable system of canals and waterways that transformed the river bank into productive farmland. The Kakamas canal system is recognised as an engineering heritage achievement. The town grew around this cooperative farming venture.
What Kakamas is Known For
Kakamas is known for the Kakamas irrigation heritage — the community-built canal system that transformed the Orange River banks. The town is the closest base to the Augrabies Falls National Park, where the Orange River plunges 56 metres in an extraordinary waterfall (more spectacular after good rains). The Orange River Wine Cellars and table grape exports from the surrounding farms are significant. The surrounding landscape of the Orange River canyon is dramatic.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town centre has banks, a supermarket, and essential services. Residential areas reflect the farming community character. Surrounding farmland along the Orange River is planted with table grapes, wine grapes, and citrus. The Augrabies Falls park entrance is 45 km west. Upington is 95 km east as the major commercial centre.
Economy & Industry
Grape farming (table grapes, wine grapes) and fruit production are the primary economic activities. The Orange River Wine Cellars cooperative processes local grapes. Tourism to Augrabies Falls generates accommodation and hospitality income. Retail serves the farming community. Upington provides the major commercial services for the district.
