History
Keimoes (pronounced "Kay-moos") developed as a farming community in the 19th century, with the Orange River's irrigation potential transforming the otherwise desert landscape into productive farmland. The town grew as a service hub for the surrounding island grape farms. The Orange River Wine Cellars cooperative, headquartered in Upington, draws grapes from the Keimoes area for its large-scale wine and raisin production.
What Keimoes is Known For
Keimoes is known for its vineyards on islands in the Orange River — a unique agricultural landscape where the river has carved fertile channels through the semi-arid Northern Cape. The Tierberg Nature Reserve on the hill above town offers hiking and panoramic views over the river valley and vineyards. The Orange River is popular for canoeing and river trips. The town's island vineyards are visually striking in the harvest season.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town centre is compact with essential services on the main road. Island farms in the Orange River are the defining landscape feature. Residential areas are modest and functional. Surrounding Kalahari hinterland is given over to stock farming and game. Kakamas is 30 km west; Upington is 60 km east. The N10 passes through the area, connecting the Orange River towns.
Economy & Industry
Grape farming — table grapes, wine grapes, and raisins — is the primary economic activity. The Orange River Wine Cellars cooperative processes the local grape harvest. River tourism (canoeing, fishing) generates some income. Retail and government services are minimal. Upington is the major commercial centre for the area. Stock and game farming in the surrounding Kalahari contribute to the regional economy.
