History
Lebowakgomo was developed in the 1970s as the capital of the Lebowa homeland — the apartheid government's territory designated for the Northern Sotho (Sepedi) people. The town was built from scratch with government offices, residential areas, and public services. After 1994, the homeland was reintegrated into the new Limpopo Province and Lebowakgomo became the capital of the Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality. The town serves a large, predominantly rural catchment area.
