History
Originally a small frontier town and hunting base, Ellisras developed in the mid-20th century around the Grootegeluk coal mine and Matimba Power Station. Renamed Lephalale in 2002, the town experienced explosive growth during the Medupi construction phase from 2007, drawing tens of thousands of workers and transforming local infrastructure. Today it remains a key node in South Africa's energy supply strategy.
What Lephalale is Known For
Lephalale is known for Medupi Power Station, South Africa's newest and largest coal-fired power plant, and the nearby Matimba Power Station. The Grootegeluk Coal Mine is one of the world's largest open-cast coal mines. The Mokolo Dam is a popular recreational destination for the community. The town is at the centre of significant coal reserve development that will shape South Africa's energy future for decades.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
Marapong is the established township and residential area, greatly expanded during the Medupi construction phase. Onverwacht is the main residential suburb for middle and upper income residents, with newer developments spreading outward. The CBD is compact but growing with retail centres and service businesses. Industrial and mining support zones surround the town along the main roads. New housing estates continue to be developed.
Economy & Industry
Coal mining, power generation, and related engineering and logistics services dominate the economy. Grootegeluk mine and Medupi and Matimba power stations are the largest employers. Construction and infrastructure services remain active as the energy complex expands. Game farming and ecotourism play a secondary role in the broader Waterberg area. Retail and services have grown significantly on the back of the energy sector influx.
