History
Founded in 1876 and named after Sir Thomas Maclear, Astronomer Royal at the Cape, the town developed as an administrative centre for the remote Maclear District. Timber plantations established in the 20th century brought employment to the area, and trout fishing in the cold mountain streams attracted sportsmen from the lowlands. The town's isolation — far from major routes — has slowed development but preserved character.
What Maclear is Known For
Maclear is known for world-class trout fishing in the streams and rivers around town, the dramatic Drakensberg foothills scenery, and the Tiffindell Ski Resort on the slopes above — South Africa's only operational ski resort when snow conditions allow. The town is also the start of several mountain hiking routes into the highlands.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The small town has a main street with essential services — fuel, a supermarket, farm supply stores, and a few guesthouses. The surrounding landscape is open grassland and mountain fynbos with commercial pine plantations on the slopes. Streams running through farm properties are the primary trout fishing draws.
Economy & Industry
Commercial forestry and timber processing are the main formal employers alongside government services. Trout fishing tourism brings seasonal visitors and supports several fly-fishing lodges in the district. Cattle and sheep farming continue across the highland grasslands. Tiffindell Ski Resort provides winter employment and attracts snow tourists in good years.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
Tiffindell Ski Resort requires advance booking in good snow years — conditions are unpredictable. Fishing permits for most rivers must be arranged through private landowners or guesthouses. The R396 road to Maclear from Elliot is scenic but can be rough in patches. Bring supplies from East London or Queenstown as selection is limited in town.
