History
Orkney was established in the 1940s as a planned company town to house gold mine workers for the mines around the Vaal River bend. The deep-level gold mines here are among the richest in South Africa and continue to produce gold from seams kilometres underground. The town was named after the Orkney Islands in Scotland, possibly by a Scottish mining engineer. It has remained a functional mining community throughout its history.
What Orkney is Known For
Orkney is known for its gold mining — the Northwest province's deep mines, including the Hartebeestfontein gold mine, have been productive for decades. The Vaal River flows past the town and the nearby Vaal Dam area is a water sports and fishing resource. The Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve near Klerksdorp offers game viewing. The town is part of the broader Klerksdorp gold mining district that has shaped the North West economy for a century.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town is modest and residential, dominated by mine housing estates and worker accommodation. The Vaal River frontage is the most pleasant area. The CBD is minimal. Kanana township is the main residential area for the broader community. Industrial and mining support zones surround the mine shafts and processing facilities. Klerksdorp is 20 km north for full commercial services.
Economy & Industry
Gold mining is the overwhelming economic driver. The deep-level mines employ thousands and generate substantial economic activity in supporting services, engineering, and logistics. Retail serves the mining workforce. Agriculture along the Vaal River adds some vegetable and crop farming. Klerksdorp provides the main commercial services for the broader district.
