History
Founded in 1878 by John Mansel Shepstone as a trade and administrative post at the Umzimkulu River mouth, Port Shepstone developed around the export of marble from the nearby Oslo Beach quarries. The town grew as the main commercial hub for the South Coast, predating the holiday resort towns that developed to its north in the 20th century. It became the seat of the Port Shepstone Magistracy and remains the district's administrative capital.
What Port Shepstone is Known For
Port Shepstone is known for its white marble, quarried at Oslo Beach just north of town — the marble has been used in buildings across South Africa, including the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The Umzimkulu River estuary is a productive fishing ground and popular spot for canoeing and birdwatching. The town is the commercial backbone of the South Coast, with a full range of retail, medical, and professional services. The KZN South Coast begins effectively at Amanzimtoti and culminates here.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town centre along Bisset Street is the commercial hub with major retailers, banks, and government offices. Oslo Beach is the upmarket northern suburb with some of the best beachfront properties on the South Coast. Oribi, Marburg, and Gamalakhe are significant residential areas. The beachfront has a modest esplanade with restaurants and entertainment. Paddock Road and the industrial area serve the logistics and manufacturing sector.
Economy & Industry
Retail, services, and government are the primary economic sectors. The marble quarrying industry at Oslo Beach is historically significant. Healthcare, with a large provincial hospital and several private facilities, is a major employer. Tourism serves the South Coast holiday economy. Light manufacturing, construction, and logistics serve the wider district. Agriculture in the surrounding Umzimkulu hinterland produces sugarcane and subtropical fruit.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
Port Shepstone is 130 km south of Durban on the N2. The town has full retail including a Checkers Hyper, private hospitals, and professional services — the best-stocked town on the South Coast.
