History
Originally a modest holiday village serving George and surrounding farms, Sedgefield grew gradually through the 20th century as a retirement and second-home destination. Its Slow Town designation in 2012 was a catalyst that formalised and celebrated what residents already felt — that Sedgefield's unhurried character was its greatest asset. The town has attracted a community of artisans, organic farmers, and creative professionals.
What Sedgefield is Known For
Sedgefield is known for the Wild Oats Community Farmer's Market, held every Saturday morning, which draws visitors from across the Garden Route for its organic produce, artisan breads, live music, and craft stalls. The Swartvlei lagoon system is a world-class paddling, windsurfing, and boating destination. Cola Beach and Myoli Beach are popular swimming spots. The Slow Town designation brings visitors seeking an antidote to urban pace.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town centre is minimal — a main road with a few shops, restaurants, and guesthouses. Cloud 9 and other residential areas on the hillside offer views over the lagoon and forest. The beach suburb along Myoli Drive is popular for holiday homes. Swartvlei is a quiet area on the other side of the lake, accessible by a short ferry. Surrounding forests are protected within the Garden Route National Park.
Economy & Industry
Tourism, retirement, and second-home ownership are the economic mainstays. The Wild Oats Market drives significant weekend visitor spend. Short-term rental accommodation is a primary income source for homeowners. Organic farming and artisanal food production feed the market economy. The broader Garden Route tourist economy — which runs from Mossel Bay to Storms River — benefits all towns along the N2, including Sedgefield.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
Sedgefield is 20 km from George Airport on the N2. The Wild Oats Market on Saturday morning (from 8am) is unmissable. Book accommodation well in advance for school holidays — the village fills completely. The Swartvlei lagoon is best explored by kayak or SUP, rentals available locally. The N2 bypasses the village — turn off at the Sedgefield off-ramp for the real experience. No medical facilities beyond a GP; Knysna and George for emergencies.
