History
Stilbaai was established as a fishing village and holiday resort in the early 20th century, developing around the protected estuary of the Goukou River. The surrounding area has been inhabited since the earliest human times — the Blombos Cave, 5 km west of town, yielded ochre art tools and shell beads dating back 75,000–100,000 years, fundamentally changing understanding of early human cognition. The town has grown as a retirement and holiday community.
What Stilbaai is Known For
Stilbaai is known for its proximity to Blombos Cave — the cave is not publicly accessible but the visitor information centre in town explains its significance. The Goukou River estuary is the town's greatest natural asset for boating, kayaking, and fishing. The Pauline Bohnen Nature Reserve protects milkwood forest and fynbos near the beach. The fossil beds exposed on the beach at low tide are fascinating geological features.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town is split by the Goukou River — the main residential and commercial area is on the east bank. The beach suburb has holiday apartments and guesthouses near the estuary mouth. Vissersdorp is a small traditional fishing community. The nature reserve borders the town's western edge. Surrounding farmland produces wheat and rooibos. Riversdale, 35 km north, is the nearest full-service town.
Economy & Industry
Fishing (harders, crayfish, linefish) is the traditional economic base. Tourism and holiday accommodation are now dominant. Short-term rentals generate income for homeowners. Retail is limited — Riversdale provides most services. The nearby Blombos Cave history brings some archaeological tourism. Retirement and second-home development has driven property demand.
