History
In 1924, workers quarrying limestone at the Buxton Limeworks near Taung uncovered a remarkable fossil skull that was brought to anatomist Raymond Dart in Johannesburg. Dart recognised it as a previously unknown species of early hominid — Australopithecus africanus — and named it the "Taung Child." This discovery, proving that Africa was the cradle of humankind, was initially controversial but is now one of the most significant findings in human evolutionary science. The site is part of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage area.
What Taung is Known For
Taung is known internationally for the Taung Skull fossil site, where the 2.8-million-year-old Australopithecus africanus skull was found. The Taung Skull Heritage Site and the Taung museum explain the discovery in context. The Harts River flows through the district, supporting some irrigation agriculture. The town is part of the Bophuthatswana homeland legacy, as it was a significant centre in the former homeland's administration.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town centre has government offices, schools, and retail services. Residential areas are larger than expected for a town of this size, reflecting the former homeland administrative function. Surrounding areas are a mix of dry bushveld and agricultural smallholdings. The Harts River valley has some irrigation farming. The Buxton limeworks site where the skull was found is outside the town on a gravel road.
Economy & Industry
Agriculture in the Harts River valley is modest. Government and education services are significant employers given the former homeland administrative function. Heritage tourism to the Taung Skull site draws international palaeontology enthusiasts. Retail serves the local community. The broader Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district has cattle and game farming as the primary land use.
