History
Tongaat developed as a company town around the Tongaat sugar mill, established in the 1850s when sugar farming began on the North Coast. Indian indentured labourers were brought from India from 1860 onward to work the cane fields, and many chose to remain after their indenture expired, establishing the large South African Indian community that defines the town's cultural character. Tongaat Hulett has been one of South Africa's most important agricultural corporations for over a century.
