History
Underberg was established as a farming community in the early 20th century in the fertile valleys below the southern Drakensberg. The name is a corruption of "Unden Berg" (under the mountain) in Afrikaans. The area developed as a market and service town for surrounding high-altitude farms. The construction of the Sani Pass road in 1955 opened Lesotho access and transformed Underberg into a tourism gateway. Today the village serves both farming and adventure tourism communities.
What Underberg is Known For
Underberg is known primarily as the gateway to Sani Pass — the dramatic 4x4 road that climbs 1,300 metres in 13 km to reach Sani Top in Lesotho, home of Africa's highest pub at 2,874 metres. The Southern Drakensberg Wilderness Area offers world-class trout fishing on the Umzimkulu, Mkomazana, and Mzimkulwana Rivers. The Drakensberg Boys Choir School at Pietermaritzburg makes annual tours to this area. The annual Underberg Farmers' Market is a community institution.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The village is very small — a main road with a handful of shops, a petrol station, and restaurants. Sani Pass Accommodation and various guesthouses are nearby. Surrounding farmland produces potatoes, sheep, and cattle in the cold highland climate. Himeville, 5 km east, is a companion village with a museum and more accommodation. Kokstad is 90 km south-east for additional services.
Economy & Industry
Trout fishing tourism, Sani Pass adventure tourism, and highland farming are the primary economic activities. Guesthouses and self-catering accommodation serve the growing mountain tourism market. Potato and livestock farming sustain the agricultural economy. Retail and services are minimal — Pietermaritzburg for major shopping. The Drakensberg tourism economy benefits all surrounding villages.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
Underberg is 200 km from Durban on the R617. The Sani Pass requires a 4x4 vehicle — several operators in Underberg offer guided day trips. Book ahead in school holidays when Sani Pass trips are fully booked. Sani Top Chalet on the Lesotho side offers accommodation and the famous highest-altitude bar. Trout fishing lodges in the area need advance booking. The climate is cold year-round — pack warm layers even in summer. Himeville, 5 km east, is worth combining for the museum.
