History
Established in 1875 as a mission station by Reverend Christiaan Schroder of the Rhenish Missionary Society, Upington grew around the fertile stretch of the Orange River. The town became a trading post for the surrounding Gordonia district, and the irrigation potential of the river was recognised early — today the Orange River Wine Cellars cooperative here is one of the largest in South Africa. The famous date palm avenue along the riverfront was planted by early settlers.
What Upington is Known For
Upington is known for its record-breaking avenue of date palms along the Orange River, recognised among the world's longest. The town is a major wine and raisin production centre, with the Orange River Wine Cellars cooperative processing grapes from hundreds of farms along the river. The Kalahari-Oranje Museum tells the story of the region's !Khomani San, Baster, and settler communities. The airport serves as an emergency landing strip for spacecraft.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The town centre along Scott Street is the commercial hub, housing banks, government offices, and retail. Le Roux Park and Louisvale are pleasant residential areas north of the CBD. Olifantshoek Road leads to industrial areas and logistics hubs. The riverfront, lined with guesthouses and restaurants, is the leisure heart of Upington. Spitsdraai is a popular riverside area for braais and picnics.
Economy & Industry
Agriculture — specifically grape, raisin, sultana, and date production — is the backbone of the economy. The Orange River Wine Cellars cooperative is one of the country's biggest wine producers. Tourism is a key secondary industry: Upington is the base for Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and Augrabies Falls visits. Retail and government services serve the wider rural Northern Cape catchment.
