History
Wilderness was originally farmland and coastal bush owned by the Van der Berg family. The first house was built in 1877 by a British settler who named the area Wilderness. Development was slow and deliberate through the 20th century — unlike the more commercial Garden Route towns, residents consistently resisted large-scale resort development. The national park designation protects most of the surrounding land, ensuring that Wilderness remains one of the least developed holiday destinations on the coast.
What Wilderness is Known For
Wilderness is known for the Wilderness Lakes system — Langvlei, Rondevlei, Swartvlei, Eilandvlei, and Groenvlei — which are protected within the Garden Route National Park and accessible by canoe. The beaches at Wilderness are wide, wild, and largely undeveloped. The area has exceptional birdlife, with over 300 species recorded in the wetlands. The Wilderness National Park headquarters is here, offering guided walks and boat trips.
Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
The village is extremely compact — a main road, a few restaurants, and a handful of shops comprise the commercial centre. Beachfront homes and holiday cottages are the dominant building typology. The area around the Touw River mouth is particularly sought after. Surrounding properties within the national park buffer are limited and tightly regulated. Most accommodation is in guesthouses, holiday cottages, and the national park rest camp.
Economy & Industry
Tourism is overwhelmingly the economic driver. Holiday accommodation, restaurants, and outdoor activity providers cater to a year-round visitor market. Canoe hire, guided birding walks, and surf lessons are popular offerings. The national park visitor economy supports local businesses. Property values are among the highest on the Garden Route due to the combination of natural beauty and restricted development. George, 15 km west, provides most professional services.
Tips for Visitors & New Residents
Wilderness is 15 km east of George on the N2. The Garden Route National Park rest camp offers self-catering units bookable through SANParks. Canoe hire is available at the Touw River mouth. The beach is excellent but strong rip currents occur — swim only in designated areas. Book accommodation months ahead for summer holidays and long weekends. George Airport makes Wilderness accessible by air. The village has limited retail — stock up in George.
